Our Story

CEBU-ANON: BEGINNINGS

Cebu-Anon (Cebu-Anonymous) has been operating since 1997 under the main and full support of a mother organization from Singapore.  It has been an abode to many men who have been entangled in the problem of drug addiction, who have decided to temporarily live in Cebu-Anon in order to be able to lead new lives under the saving grace of God.

This ministry was originally an outreach ministry of a Christian halfway house for drug addicts in Singapore which was founded by Brother Robert Yeo in 1987.  Cebu-Anon is the fruit of the labors of two brothers of this mother organization (The Helping Hand) who, in 1993, embarked on a mission trip to the Philippines.  Seeing for themselves the drug problem of the country, the vision of reaching out to the Filipino drug addicts through the Word of God was conceived.  In 1994, after an Evangelistic mission in Cebu, they stayed on to help in a local Christian church while overseeing the establishment of the ministry of Cebu-Anon.

For a time, the outreach project was about to stabilize its operations when the ministry was duly registered and Cebu-Anon leased ten rooms in a building in Cebu City.  However, plans of establishing a fully equipped rehabilitation center were discontinued because of strained diplomatic relationships between the Philippines and Singapore, the country where the mother organization was located due to the problems with overseas Filipino contract workers at that time.  The sympathetic owner of the building which was leased by Cebu-Anon revoked the lease agreement, and the foreign supporters went back home with the thought that the Philippines was not to be their harvest ground for the Lord.

But in September 1996, three years after the vision of a rehabilitation center was conceived, this present writer was already the pastor of the Living Christian Church in Cebu at that time, wrote to the foreign supporter and asked him for the revival of Cebu-Anon.  Touched by this Pastor’s pleas, the foreign sponsor led a contingent of five men and returned to Cebu.  It was during this trip that God led them to a 22-room four-story building in a suburb of Cebu City.  They set up a drug rehabilitation center, and they also functioned as the founding staff.

Cebu-Anon opened its doors again in January of 1997.  Many applicants for admission presented themselves and soon, accommodation became such a problem that the Dangerous Drugs Board advised us to find a more spacious location than this site.  And so in January of 1998, a local Christian offered to Cebu-Anon the use of 6,000 square meters of land as a new site for the ministry.  Building plans were drawn up, and the construction work finally took place.  Completion of the building was expected by August of that same year; however, financial problems delayed its completion.  Finally, the building was completed in October 1998.  Thus, from the noisy urban environment that Cebu-Anon at first had to inhabit, the ministry was then transferred to the new building which is located in a serene environment more conducive to the recovery of the drug addicts.

Since then, the Cebu-Anon, has come a long way.  The ministry has three dormitories having a bed capacity of at least 50 persons.  Today, Cebu-Anon, now known as House of Hope Incorporated, is considered to be one of the most ideal, and one of the most effective treatment (not to mention one of the longest operating facility) and drug rehabilitation centers in the Visayas.

Joselito Diores

It is such a privilege to share my testimony of how drug addiction ruined my life, and how the saving power of God found me and restored me. My story is a story of a son who was lost and was found. My name is JoselitoDiores, married and currently serving as a staff in the ministry of the House of Hope. I have been serving this ministry for the past 18 years now. It was in the year 1986 when I had a first taste of illegal drugs. My friends introduced me these things and I got hooked in no time. By 1990, despite my growing addiction, I was able to get a job in one of the companies in Cebu (MCWD) where I became a regular employee. For most of us, this should be a turning point in one’s life like starting to plan for a bright future especially if you already have a family to support. But unfortunately I never even considered this idea. In fact I became more engrossed on my addiction. My life was now slowly disintegrating before my eyes. Every day was centered on drugs and became a slave to it. I was lost, and I couldn’t find my way out.

Michael Floreto

I'm the youngest in a family of three siblings, with an older brother and sister. Both my parents were professionals. My father was a Professional Mechanical Engineer and my mother was a University teacher and Certified Public Accountant. I completed my education from kindergarten through to high school at an exclusive private school run by the Jesuit Fathers. When I was in high school, I hated people who took drugs. This was in the late 1980s when the choice of drugs were marijuana, cough syrup and pain killers. I saw known drug users and addicts acting crazy and not in their right minds. But then it was also this time that I started drinking alcohol with friends. I was good at it and well trained by older friends, and was handling myself pretty well.

Ginno Amodia

I was awakened from my midsummer night’s slumber as the cold wind sent me shivering. As my eyes searched, it caught the visage of a boy, in his teen years, who was sleeping next to me. I had spent the night in this PUJ, the owner of whom I have not even laid eyes on. And this boy was a car washer. Yes, I had slept with car washers! I had to rub the sleep off my eyes to see if this was all for real. I could hardly believe if this was really me. Am I one of them now? Do I deserve to belong here? Sunrise was yet hours away. I was precarious if there’ll ever be one in this pixilated life of mine. I couldn’t get back to my zizz then. So, I spent the wee hours pondering and recalling how I came to be in this mess. My whole being was engulfed in sin and confusion. I was trapped. My life was in a whirlwind…I was hooked on drugs.
